Mission Statement
At IntoxBox, our mission is very simple: save lives by helping the public avoid the costly mistake of driving under the influence of alcohol. Nearly 12,000 people die from alcohol related driving deaths in the US each year, many of whom are innocent victims. There are a lot of opinions on how to deal with this ongoing issue, but we feel the IntoxBox is the first tangible solution to curtailing this problem.
There is no shortage of people who believe that if you have had even a little bit to drink, you should not be driving. And while this method works for many individuals, the reality is that our laws state that a person can drive with a blood alcohol content below .08 (unless they can be proven to be impaired). We believe that giving people this cushion of uncertainty leads many to take the risk, contributing to the 158 million self-reported drunk driving incidents in the US each year. It’s also quite common for otherwise responsible, law-abiding citizens to find themselves on the wrong side of .08, which is another indicator that this is often an act of ignorance.
With the belief that simply telling people not to drink and drive is not enough to combat this issue, our goal began by outlining the most preventable cause of drinking and driving. We have surveyed hundreds of first time DUI offenders, finding that an astounding 47% of them believed to be under the legal limit when deciding to drive. And Of the 53% that believed they were over the legal limit, the vast majority were unsure whether they were over or not. Finally, 85% said that if they had known definitively that they were over the legal limit, they would not have driven.
These results show very clearly that our nation wants to be more responsible about this serious issue, they just don’t have the means of making better decisions. That’s where IntoxBox comes in. If we can make this resource available to bar patrons all over the US and let them know when they should not be driving, we believe that we will finally begin to see a big drop-off in these tragic drunk driving accidents.
